The red-brick rowhouses built in the 1920s and 1930s that now make up much of Glover Park still look on the outside much as they did when they were constructed. The houses are particularly famous for their front porches. Many of the two- and three-story homes' interiors have been renovated, and some have had additions added in the rear. The neighborhood also has a mix of condominiums and apartments, although the latter are disappearing as the older buildings are renovated into condos. A few modern houses have been built in the neighborhood.

HIGHLIGHTS

Glover Park is one of the friendliest neighborhoods in Washington. Children can be seen playing on the small front lawns and families often enjoy a spring day on their porches and wave to neighbors as they pass by. Stoddert Elementary School is located in the heart of Glover Park as is its adjacent recreation area. Across Wisconsin Avenue is Guy Mason Recreation Center. Both parks have gone through renovations sponsored by the neighbors over the last several years. The neighborhood celebrates its annual Glover Park Day in June. Glover Park is bordered on the west by the Glover-Archbold Park and to the south by the Whitehaven Parkway. There is a community garden on 42nd Street, which is one of the few victory gardens in continuous use since World War II.

Ample shopping and restaurants abound on Wisconsin Avenue. On the Glover Park side of Wisconsin are Blockbusters and the local post office along with several nightspots and restaurants ranging from pizza and barbeque to French, Indian, German, and Thai. Across the avenue is a local book store, Whole Foods market, Japanese restaurant, and several stores selling fans, furniture, and Vespas. There is also a health club and a hardware store.

HISTORY

Like Cleveland Park and other Northwest neighborhoods, Glover Park was used as a summer resort after the Civil War. Most of the homes were Victorians along tree-lined streets. With the introduction of streetcars, the neighborhood became another suburb of downtown Washington. The older summer houses were demolished, and development began in Glover Park around 1925. The majority of the homes introduced to the neighborhood were red-brick rowhouses.

The neighborhood was named after Charles Carroll Glover who owned the area that is the major part of today's Glover Park. Glover was Director of the Washington and Georgetown Railroad, President of the Corcoran Art Gallery, President of Riggs Bank, and a friend of President Theodore Roosevelt. He was instrumental in many city endeavors including the building of the National Cathedral, completion of the Washington Monument, extending the city limits beyond L'Enfant's plan, and helping create over 3,200 acres of city parkland including his donation of land for the creation of Glover-Archbold Park.
