Most
of the homes in Wakefield are single-family. There are a
few houses remaining from the 19th century. Other houses
are mixes of Colonial brick and frame houses, Cape Cods,
and contemporaries. Connecticut Avenue has a few condominiums and historic cooperatives, some dating back
to the 1920s.
HIGHLIGHTS
This triangular shaped neighborhood is a reflection of
its adjacent neighbors of Forest Hills, Chevy Chase, and
North Cleveland Park put together in a smaller area. Murch Elementary School is in Wakefield and Alice Deal
Junior High and Woodrow Wilson Senior High Schools
are just across Nebraska Avenue. Fort Reno Park and its reservoir are also to the near west. Ample shopping can
be found on Connecticut and Wisconsin Avenues.
HISTORY
Wakefield
is part of the land that was granted by Lord
Baltimore to Thomas Addison and James Stoddert in
1713 (see
history of
Chevy Chase).
It was also a part of the village that sprang up at the
end of the18th Century surrounding the intersection of
today's Wisconsin Avenue and River Road that was
to be known as Tenleytown (see history of
American University
Park).
Like its adjacent neighbors, development began in
Wakefield with the introduction of the trolley lines on
Connecticut and Wisconsin Avenues connecting the area to
downtown before the 19th century. The Grant Road historic district in Wakefield covers only two blocks and
includes less than a dozen houses that date to the mid 1800s.
